Living to Please God
1 Thessalonians 4:1-2
As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
We all know how we are supposed to live. The American Heart Association tells us to eat healthily. Exercise daily. Don’t smoke. Pretty simple rules, and some of us follow them better than others. Some of us eat healthy foods every day. Others eat fast food twice a day, but exercise without fail. It’s easier to stick with these basic habits when we are committed. We write down what we eat, when we exercise and why we want to be healthy. God has given us rules to live by, too. Some of us are devoted followers — we read the Bible every day. We pray, we go to church every Sunday. But is that really what Jesus is asking you to do? Or is he calling you to do more — or different — and you are letting those calls go unanswered? Or are you one of the many Christians who is skating by — you believe, go to church once in a while and always put something in the offering plate, but your heart isn’t in it? Well, your spiritual heart health is just as important as your physical heart health. So today, stop and spend a few moments listening for what God is calling you to do. Because we all can do more to live the life God is calling us to lead.
