Slogans for the Books of the Bible

Even for those who are familiar with the Bible, it is often difficult to remember what happened where or which book is about who.

Over the next 39 days, I’ll be tweeting a catchphrase or slogan for each book of the Old Testament that attempts to capture the “essence” of the book. You can follow me on Twitter at rightrevruss or just check back here and see the scroll to the right of this post.

As we often study passages in isolation, it is my hope that these will help you put some stories and people in the right places. And, in keeping with our sermon series theme, some of them will make you laugh.

Laughing Toward Lent Starts Sunday

In the weeks leading up to Lent, we’ll be looking at what some feel is an unlikely spiritual discipline–laughter. Laughter is one of God’s great gifts to us, and if we are not engaging in it on a regular basis, we may find it difficult (impossible?) to grow into the people God calls us to be.

In the midst of cold and flu season, an economic crisis, unrest in the Arab world and mind-numbing coverage of the Presidential race, come and laugh with us as we journey together as God’s people.

Deadly Sins

Doing some reading and research to get ready for our Bible study that kicks off tonight on the Seven Deadly Sins, and I came across Mahatma Ghandi’s take on what he believed to be the seven deadly sins. I think these may be a little more challenging than the original list.

Wealth without Work
Pleasure without Conscience
Science without Humanity
Knowledge without Character
Politics without Principle
Commerce without Morality
Worship without Sacrifice

Celebrating Christmas

It was a blessed Christmas at First Presbyterian. Those who gathered for worship heard the Word proclaimed, prayed for our community and our world, and engaged in mission by making scarves for The Van ministry and creating snack lunch sacks for the hungry.

Other members of First Pres reached out to some of the families we met during our Stone Soup Event in Melrose Circle. Lynette and Sherrie rallied church members, friends and neighbors to make sure that kids in Melrose Circle had a great Christmas. Thanks to all who contributed toward the effort.
